Diego Tamez, a quarterback for the Borregos Mexico City youth league, has been announced as a future member of the NFL Academy, and is the first Mexican playing in this position to be selected.

The NFL Academy is an elite development initiative created by the National Football League to identify and train young talent from outside of the United States. Its primary objective is to offer outstanding athletes aged between 12 and 19 a direct path to college football and, eventually, the NFL.

The PrepaTec student shares his excitement at having been selected from among more than 1,500 applicants.

“I feel very happy, very grateful for this opportunity. The ability to be among people who have the same dream as you makes it much more special”, says Diego, who received the news accompanied by his family.

The 17-year-old student will complete his studies at the PrepaTec Mexico City campus and will then travel to the UK to begin two years of training at the NFL Academy.

His love for football

Diego’s history in this sport began more than 10 years ago thanks to his family, who passed on their passion for football to him.

He began playing at the age of four, when his father enrolled him in a team. At fourteen, he had the opportunity to live in Canada for a year to continue practicing.

The stay in Canada caught the attention of Borregos Mexico City, who invited him to become part of their team’s youth category; he accepted the opportunity and began his studies at Tec de Monterrey.

“The NFL Academy quarterbacks coach contacted me, told me he liked my highlights, and that he would like to see me at the tryouts”.

On the way to the NFL Academy

Tamez says that his first step toward getting to the NFL Academy wasn’t through physical tests or contacts, but rather thanks to social media

After uploading a compilation of his best plays on X, Diego had his first contact with the NFL Academy, who invited him to be part of the tryouts.

“Honestly, the NFL Academy wasn’t part of my plans, but posting my highlights really helped me.

“The NFL Academy offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach contacted me, told me he liked my highlights, and that he would like to see me at the tryouts”, Tamez recounts.

Diego will have the opportunity to study abroad for two years at Loughborough University in the UK. He will also have the opportunity to train with elite athletes from all over the world.

The path to the NFL Academy

The player highlights how important the support of his family and friends has been throughout his football journey:

I couldn’t have done this without their help. All the effort they have put in to coming and watching me train or watching my games is reflected in everything I’m able to achieve now”, he declares.

Finally, Diego shares what he has learned throughout his time in football:

“You should never stop fighting to achieve your dreams. You need to be patient and keep striving for what you want”, concludes Diego Tamez, who aspires to be part of the NFL.
