Kenya Maturana has received a track and field scholarship at the University of Arkansas in the United States, where she will continue her academic and athletic training.

For the athlete from PrepaTec Metepec, this achievement represents the result of several years’ work.

“Getting into the university represents the effort and dedication I have put in for years; it’s not easy to get into that type of school in the United States. “It’s a very good place to continue my studies,” she said.

The process began when she decided to contact the head coach of the University of Arkansas track and field team directly and share her athletic journey with him.

“It was a matter of contacting the head track and field coach at Arkansas and sending him my résumé; that’s where it all began”, she explained.

Later, she was invited to visit the institution. “They noticed me and paid for me to visit the university to see what it offers both academically and athletically”, she said.

When questioned about the things that influenced her being selected, she highlighted two key parts of her training: My self-discipline and the passion I have for what I do”.

In addition to joining the university, Kenya has already been selected to represent Mexico at the Central American Games in the Dominican Republic, which forms part of her participation in international competitions.

Reflecting on the impact of this experience on her future goals, she commented: “I will achieve both my athletic and academic goals in the future. I’ll be able to participate in many important sporting events”.

Finally, she shared a message with those seeking similar opportunities.

“It’s not easy to do this; work hard at your sport as well as in school in the time leading up to your senior year of high school, because having a good GPA matters too”, she concluded.

Kenya Maturana will begin her university studies in the United States thanks to this scholarship and will continue her athletic development internationally.
