The TM Racing team, from Tec’s campuses in Mexico City, has become the first Mexican and Latin American team to win first place in the Concept Class Overall category of the Formula Student UK world competition.

This competition is supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers worldwide and offers students the opportunity to test their skills in a competition to design and build a single-seater sports car.

“We have defeated those who invented motorsports. Today, we have shown that Mexico is also well-positioned in this type of competition,” said Raúl Guzmán, a recent graduate in Data Science and Mathematical Engineering from theTec’s State of Mexico campus.

Furthermore, TM Racing also received other awards, including fourth place in Business Plan Presentation, seventh place in Concept Class Costs, fifth place in Lap Time Simulation, and a special mention in the Racing Pride Aston Martin Award for Diversity & Inclusion.

120 teams from universities such as Imperial College London, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia participated in this 2025 edition of Formula Student UK.

The road to the United Kingdom

The TM Racing team was established in 2017 by Ary Román and Pedro Mass. Right from the start, its dream was to compete in Formula Student UK.

“As a team, we have always aimed to build a bridge between the American continent and the European-dominated world of motorsports,” added Damaris Guadarramaan Innovation and Development Engineering student at the Tec’s State of Mexico campus.

TM Racing has competed every year since then, with more than 60 team members divided into 11 areas, including project management, costs, manufacturing, and aerodynamics.

In this edition, the team’s challenge was to design a prototype race car. The project required teamwork, time management, budget control, and a final presentation to a jury.

This year, Willem Toet, a Formula 1 aerodynamic engineer for teams such as Ferrari, was a member of the jury that selected TM Racing as the winner in its category at Formula Student UK.

“The presentation was at engineering level, in which every decision to achieve the objective was questioned, just like an engineering meeting aimed at improving Formula 1 cars,” said Fernando García, a mechatronics student at the Tec’s State of Mexico campus.

TM Racing went with a new design as part of their strategy, focusing on every detail, from the wheels to the chassis.

“Part of this whole process would not have been possible without the equipment available at the Tec’s laboratories on the State of Mexico campus, where we set up base to work from.

“Thanks to these tools, we were able to push ourselves even further to take first place in the competition,” said Luis Floresa mechanical engineering student at the Tec’s State of Mexico campus.

About the competition

Formula Student UK is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and is considered by the automotive industry to be the standard that engineering graduates must meet to move from university to the world of work.

Each year, the competition brings together more than 100 university teams from around the world, with the majority participating from European universities, as well as teams from Egypt, Australia, China, and other Asian countries.

“It’s an honor to represent your team and your flag. It’s not just our effort; it’s the effort of everyone who believes in this.

“There aren’t many things in life that top that feeling. This is not a competition, it’s an honor,” said Jorge Granadosa mechatronics student at the Tec’s Santa Fe campus.

Next year, the challenge for the team from the Tec’s campuses in Mexico City will be to compete with an entirely builtsingle-seater car.

“We’ve got a project that works and has been validated by us and a panel of experts. We will continue seeking support and promotion of motorsports in Mexico,” concluded Guadarrama.
