TecSalud’s Zambrano Hellion Hospital has been certified by the Pan American Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (PANCCO) as a Center of Excellence for the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The certification was given for the quality of service and the success of treatments, becoming the first hospital in Mexico to receive this international distinction.
“It’s testament to our commitment to medical excellence,” said Dr. Manuel Martínez Vázquez, a gastroenterology specialist and leader of the IBD Clinic at the hospital’s Digestive Health Institute.
“This recognition has allowed us to reaffirm our leadership in the field, dedication to providing high-quality care, and our ability to meet the most demanding international standards,” he emphasized.
The certificate was presented on February 19 in Berlin, Germany, during the 20th Congress of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization.
Excellence in key indicators
The audit process was conducted in January by Bureau Veritas, a global certification company based in France.
It included a review of documentation, detailed interviews with patients, and an inspection of the hospital’s facilities.
“As we were convinced that we met all the requirements, we decided to apply. It was a rigorous evaluation process based on international consensus on 52 key parameters,” said Dr. Martínez.
According to the doctor, these parameters included:
- Availability of advanced medical imaging and endoscopy equipment
- Timely access to operating rooms and infusion centers
- Specific areas for emergencies and consultations
- Imaging, pathology, and laboratory services
- A multidisciplinary team of specialists
- Clinical research and professional training
- Visiting national and foreign doctors at the hospital
- Constant innovation in advanced treatments
He also mentioned that a particularly successful part of the evaluation was the quality-of-service parameter, measured through indicators such as patient mortality.
“They evaluated an important parameter, which is mortality among patients with IBD, and we haven’t had a single death in the last five years,” he emphasized.
A disease on the rise in Mexico
Dr. Manuel Martínez mentioned that IBD is a chronic condition that affects the digestive tract, presenting itself as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.
According to the doctor, the disease can affect multiple organs and primarily affects young people.
He explained that its cause is multifactorial, involving genetic and environmental factors, and its symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating, gas, bleeding, and persistent diarrhea.
“We reaffirm our ability to meet the most demanding international standards.” - Dr. Manual Martínez
He warned that rates of IBD have increased considerably in Mexico and stressed the importance of early detection and treatment.
“At TecSalud, we have the latest disease diagnosis and treatment technology, and that’s part of what makes us a center of excellence,” he commented.
Dr. Francisco Bosques Padilla, Director of the Digestive Health Institute at the Zambrano Hellion Hospital, shared his pride in receiving the recognition.
“We have developed high-level medical practice as the result of having a solid multidisciplinary team which meets international standards,” he said.
“This certification confirms our commitment to medical excellence and the quality of patient care,” added Dr. Bosques.
The certification is valid from February 1 through January 2028, “...so we have an obligation to maintain and improve our standards,” the doctor concluded.
