Tec community athletes have excelled in sports such as football, basketball, tennis, and athletics, among others

In 2024, athletes from various disciplines who are Tec de Monterrey students or graduates excelled in national and international sports competitions.

Basketball, athletics, swimming, tennis, football, and flag football are some sports in which members of the Tec community had achievements.

The athletes participated in national championships, CONADEIP competitions, world cups, world championships, ONEFA, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

CONECTA shares some outstanding stories of Tec de Monterrey students and graduates in sports.

The Tec community was represented at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Tec graduates Édgar Rivera and Paola Morán competed in the high jump and 400-meter sprint, respectively, while PrepaTec León graduate Cecilia Tamayo competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprint.

Also, student Mariana Aguilar competed in sailing in the iQFoil windsurfing category; PrepaTec graduate Jorge Iga in the 100-meter freestyle swimming; and Tec graduate Gabriela Rodríguez in shooting.

Édgar Rivera finished in 15th place, while Paola Moran reached the semifinal, where she recorded 50.73 seconds, the second-best time of her career.

Although Cecilia Tamayo didn’t make it through the first round of the 100 meters, she qualified for the playoffs for the 200 meters.

5 Tec players won silver for Mexico at flag football world championship

Four female Borregos players from the Santa Fe campus and one Tec graduate from the Guadalajara campus won silver with the Mexican women’s national team at the 2024 IFAF Flag Football Championship in Finland.

The Mexican team included Diana Flores, Ángela Funes, Victoria Chávez, and Andrea Martínez from the Santa Fe campus Borregos and Ana Aguayo, a Tec graduate from the Guadalajara campus.

Despite the 18-31 final loss to the United States, Mexico proved to be a strong team in flag football, an Olympic sport for Los Angeles in 2028.

The national team also qualified for the World Games next year in China by finishing among the top eight in this tournament.

Diana Flores participates in Olympic torch relay

Diana Flores, quarterback for the Mexican flag football team, was part of the Olympic torch relay team in Cannes, France.

The Tec Santa Fe campus graduate carried the torch in the 34th stage of the journey towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Olympic athletes Megan Rapinoe, Shaun White, Paul Rabil, Sue Bird, and Chloe Kim also participated in the relay.

The Olympic torch relay is a tradition held months before the Olympic Games, in which the torch is lit in Greece and then travels through several cities in the host country.

Borregos Monterrey women’s team on podium at 3x3 World Cup

Four students from Tec in Monterrey won the bronze medal in the FISU 3x3 World Cup.

Karina Esquer, Deyna González, Irais Aguilera, and Anisa Jeffries made up the Monterrey campus women’s basketball team that participated in the tournament held in Xiamen, China.

“It means a lot because it represents the tremendous effort we put in throughout the year, not just in 3x3 but also in 5x5. As well as being cumulative fatigue, it’s a cumulative strategy. I feel incredibly happy and honored to represent this institution,” Esquer stated.

This is the third consecutive time this team has stood on the championship podium with a medal of each color.

Double 3x3 World Champion!

Paola Danaé Flores became a 3x3 champion at the FISU 3x3 World Cup for the second consecutive year.

“To be honest, I didn’t expect it. I was very nervous, but we won the second championship. I’m very proud to put the Tec and my country at the top of world basketball,” said the two-time champion.

During the competition, the women’s 3x3 basketball team from the Tec Toluca campus, represented by Paola Danae Flores, Ana Karen Sanchez, Elisa Maria Rodriguez, Mariana Lira Roman managed to position themselves among the top eight teams in the world tournament.

Borregos Monterrey: Three-time champions!

Borregos Monterrey won its third ONEFA Major League title against Auténticos Tigres with an overtime field goal by Leonardo Guajardo.

During the game held at the Borregos’ home, Estadio Banorte, the Monterrey campus team defeated the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon team 24-21, winning its third consecutive championship.

Borregos Monterrey’s coach, Carlos Altamirano, highlighted that the title is more enjoyable because of how it was won.

“Winning against such an opponent in a match like this makes me enjoy it even more. I’m very happy with the team, staff and my sincere compliments to the Tigres,” he said.

The Borregos Monterrey team closed its undefeated season with a tri-championship and continues to be undefeated at home.

Gold and Mexican record for Tec swimmers

Borregos Monterrey swimmers Jorge Trueba, Maximiliano Pérez, Guillermo Cepeda, and Andrés González set the Mexican record in the 4x50 freestyle relay at the first Querétaro International Cup.

The students achieved a time of 1”34”11 in the competition held in February, beating the previous record of 1”35”10 set in 2004.

This result was enough for them to win the gold medal in the first-division category.

“In this competition, we decided to take part in the preparation because it’s a 50-meter pool, and we compete at altitude. It helped us a lot,” said Mauricio Campos, swimming coach for Borregos Monterrey.

Trueba, Cepeda, and González are students from the Monterrey campus, while Max Pérez is a PrepaTec Eugenio Garza Lagüera student.

Big Eight Women’s Double Champions!

The Monterrey campus Borregos women’s basketball team won the second title of the ABE League’s Big Eight after defeating the Águilas from the State of Puebla’s Autonomous Public University (UPAEP) 61-55 in the final.

“From the beginning of the season, our goal was to reach the final, always focusing on achieving the second championship, and we did it in the end,” said coach Rosales.

“I am very proud of how the girls played; they were attentive at all times and always eager to win,” she added.

The team from Monterrey reached the final after defeating the Leones from North Anahuac University in the quarterfinals, 79-49, and then winning in the semifinals against the Tigres from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, 70-42.

Volleyball: Champions of NORCECA Pan-American Cup

Diego Ruiz and Alexis Alvarado, Tec Querétaro campus students and members of the Borregos Querétaro senior volleyball team, were part of the Mexican team that won the 2024 NORCECA Pan-American Cup held in Paramaribo, Suriname.

The Cup is an international event in which the eight best teams compete. The Mexican team won the championship by defeating Peru , scoring 3 sets to 1.

Diego Ruiz, an Administration and Finance student, emphasized how they were included in the Mexican national team and how their play contributed to the level shown in the championship.

“I’d committed to winning an individual goal before the competition”, the player said.

 

Best of the year! CONADEIP awards Borregos Monterrey

In recognition of its achievements in various sports disciplines, the National Student Sports Commission for Private Institutions (CONADEIP) recognized Borregos Monterrey as the best sports program of the year.

This recognition was awarded at the organization’s national conference after the Monterrey campus obtained first place in the Primera Fuerza and Juvenile B and C categories.

“We’re happy because this achievement shows the good work being done in Monterrey from its high schools, undergraduate or primera fuerza level, and also the master’s degree,” said Sigifredo Treviño, Monterrey’s Athletic and Sports Director.

 

First Mexican woman to win Ice Triple Crown

Anna Valeria Zuccolotto Soto, a Finance graduate from the Tec León campus, became the first Mexican woman to win the Ice Triple Crown.

What’s more, she became one of only 18 people in the world to be endorsed by the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) with this recognition.

She has been playing sports since her student days, and after some time focusing on her professional life, she realized how much she loved it.

After training in various disciplines, she found her passion swimming in icy waters, where temperatures cannot exceed 5° Celsius.

Historic kick by PrepaTec graduate in the U.S.

Jesús Gómez, kicker for Eastern Michigan University, broke the record for the longest field goal in the history of his university with a 57-yard kick.

The Puebla PrepaTec graduate performed it during the game between Eastern Michigan and the University of Washington in the “Football Bowl Subdivision” (FBS).

He also broke the record for most field goals of more than 50 yards in the same game, scoring two.

 

 

 

Coach Kelly recognized with Mujer Tec Award

In recognition of her two-decade career in football and flag football and as the first Mexican coach to be part of the American Football Coaches Association (A.F.C.A.), coach Arely Pérez received the Mujer Tec Award.

Coach Kelly, as she is known, was awarded in the Sports and Sports Management category.

“On a personal level, I strive to be my own hero by cultivating my willpower, enhancing my self-awareness, and building my confidence each day,” she stated.

According to the coach, a significant factor in her journey was the opportunity given to her by her head coach to become the first female coach of the Borregos CEM team, all thanks to her hard work and passion for the sport.

Tec CEM wins 2024 National Tennis Championship

The Tec State of Mexico women’s tennis team won the National Student Sports Commission for Private Institutions (CONADEIP) national title.

Elda Lara, Isabela Alanís, Daniela Cerrato, Sofía Pelayo, Yoali Cisneros, and Mirelle Cortés are the Tec students who won.

“This year we were more united. We were able to keep our problems off the court so we could enter each game calmly and in support of each other,” recalled Sofía, who is studying for a master’s degree in Quality and Productivity.

The women’s team has been preparing to achieve this goal since January, as they consider the national team tennis championship to be the most important during the August-December season.
