Tec de Monterrey in the Top 100 on sustainable development topics

The Tec stands out for its actions in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023.

Tec de Monterrey has been ranked in the Top 100 of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023, which evaluate the progress made by universities on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In this year’s rankings, the Tec received a score of 89 out of 100, which placed it as the 92nd university worldwide due to its improved efforts. Out of Latin American universities, it came in second place.

The four best ranked SDGs for Tec de Monterrey worldwide were:

SDG 7.- Affordable and Clean Energy (10th place)
SDG 1.- No Poverty (16th place)
SDG 17.- Partnerships for the Goals (16th place)
SDG 6.- Clean Water and Sanitation (30th place)

“Achieving a leading position in one of the rankings with greatest prestige worldwide speaks to us about the work of all the people who form part of the Tec Community,” said Inés Sáenz, Vice President of Inclusion, Social Impact, and Sustainability.

“Science and technology have to be functional: they should help seek viable solutions as these are the basis for responding to and tackling the world’s major problems,” remarked Guillermo Torre, Vice President of Research at the Tec.

1,625 universities participated in this year’s THE University Impact Rankings, a hundred more than in 2022; this year’s first place in the rankings is held by Western Sydney University.

Cooperating on a sustainable world

The SDGs are a kind of road map towards a sustainable future stipulated by world leaders and the UN in 2015 to emphasize and work on overcoming pressing global challenges.

“To leave no one behind, it is important to meet each of these goals by 2030,” said the global organization.

“In 2020, we presented our Sustainable Development Initiative Report; three years later, we’ve mapped more than 820 initiatives with a direct impact on the 17 SDGs. The Tec has contributed to a total of more than 134 specific targets on the 2030 Agenda,” said Sáenz.

Alumnos y voluntarios Tec en el proyecto Campana-Altamira — Together with the government of Nuevo León, the municipality of Monterrey, and CEMEX, the Tec has been working since 2015 on the Campana-Altamira initiative to support a zone suffering from urban poverty in Monterrey.

Methodology for evaluating universities

The methodology of the THE Impact Rankings uses carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

Any university that provides data on SDG 17 and at least three other SDGs is included in the overall ranking. Each SDG is classified individually according to the indicators measured.

A university’s total score in the rankings is calculated by combining its score in SDG 17 with its best three results on the remaining 16 SDGs.
