Tecnológico de Monterrey has been ranked as the top university in Mexico and in 4th place for Latin America by the Times Higher Education (THE) evaluation firm.

The sixth Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings placed the Tec in these positions among the region’s public and private institutions as a result of improvements in Research, Citations and International Outlook.

This year, more than 200 universities from Latin American countries were evaluated, including 30 from Mexico.

The same metrics, criteria and rigor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings were used in this ranking, but were weighted differently to reflect the characteristics of Latin American universities.

David Garza Salazar, rector and executive president of the Tec, pointed out that the institution has become a national and international knowledge hub despite the current challenging context and that this was reflected in this type of evaluation.

“While it is a privilege to occupy this position, we should remember that it also obliges us to continue working on developing our educational model, which is already producing excellent results,” he stressed.

Juan Pablo Murra, rector of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies, added that these results show the Tec has strengthened its position thanks to the contributions it has made to society in areas such as research, science, and technology.

Evaluation weightings

The Times Higher Education Latin America Rankings gather global performance statistics to evaluate research-intensive universities.

The metrics are grouped into 5 areas, which are evaluated in the following way:

  • Research (volume, income, and reputation): 34%
  • Citations (research influence): 20%
  • International Outlook (staff, students, and research): 7.5%
  • Industry Income (knowledge transfer): 2.5%

The highest rankings for the institution were in the following areas: Research, which gained 92.6 points; Citations, with 78.1 points; and International Outlook, with 89.8 points.

Guillermo Torre, rector of TecSalud and vice president of Research at the Tec, confirmed that the institution is committed to promoting disruptive solutions through science.

“Our presence in this ranking is directly related to the investment in research made by the institution,” he explained.

Torre added that the research undertaken at the Tec is strategic, which was reaffirmed in the Strategic Plan for 2025.

“It’s important to generate strategic partnerships with other bodies so that we can encourage more young people to get involved in science and technology nationwide, thus creating a virtuous circle,” he said.
