Diana Flores, quarterback of the Mexican national flag football team, took part in the Olympic Torch Relay in Cannes, France.
The graduate from the Tec’s Santa Fe campus carried the torch in the 34th stage of the relay in the run up to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Also participating in the relay were Olympic athletes Megan Rapinoe, Shaun White, Paul Rabil, Sue Bird, and Chloe Kim.
The Olympic Torch Relay is a tradition followed months before the Olympic Games, in which the torch is lit in Greece and then carried through several cities of the host country.
The relay for Paris 2024 began in Marseilles, France, and will conclude on July 26 at the Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games in Paris.
“I’m very happy and excited about what it means for our sport (flag football), as it will be an Olympic sport in 2028,” said Diana on her social networks.
“My dream is to see flag football in the Olympic Games.”
Mexican leaving an impression at the Olympic Games
Diana gained international recognition in 2022, when she led the Mexican flag football team to win a gold medal at the World Games.
During the tournament, the creation of the “Vision28” group was announced, a campaign to promote the inclusion of the sport at Los Angeles 2028.
Vision28 was headed by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and the NFL, with Diana Flores as representative of flag football athletes.
“As an athlete, my dream is to see flag football in the Olympic Games, to see the game that I love represented on sport’s greatest stage,” said the Mexican sportswoman during the announcement in 2022.
Last October, the International Olympic Committee announced that flag football would be on the program for the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028.
As an official ambassador for the NFL, Diana Flores has declared on several occasions that she hopes to be able to win an Olympic medal for Mexico.
Last year, the Tec graduate was included on Forbes magazine’s “30 under 30” list in the sports category due to her efforts to promote flag football in Mexico and the United States.
