Evaluation based on academic reputation and scientific impact
The QS World University Rankings by Subject uses a methodology that combines different indicators to measure the quality and impact of universities in each discipline.
Its main criteria include academic reputation, which compiles the opinions of international experts; and employer reputation, which evaluates the productive sector’s perception of alumni.
This also includes indicators related to scientific production, such as the number of research citations per paper and the H-index, which measures the influence of academic work.
Another of the indicators considered is international research network, which analyzes scientific collaborations between universities from different countries and the capacity of institutions to generate knowledge in global networks.
Each discipline is weighted differently on these indicators, depending on the characteristics of each field of knowledge.
The QS Rankings by Subject has become a benchmark for students, researchers, and universities around the world, as it enables institutional performance to be compared in specific areas of knowledge and not only in general classifications.
In the 2026 edition, this list included universities from 166 countries and territories, reflecting rising levels of global competition in the area of higher education.

Increasingly competitive rankings
“North America continues to be the region with the most subjects classified; however, East Asia stands out as the main engine of growth by holding the most new entries in the rankings,” said Sam Duke, QS classifications specialist.
According to Quacquarelli Symonds, this edition evaluated over 21,000 academic programs, which represents growth of more than 1% over the previous year.
What’s more, nearly two thousand institutions participated, with a growth of more than 8%, as well as the incorporation of over 300 new universities.
In the regional sphere, North America remains the zone with the greatest representation in the rankings; however, East Asia stands out due to the greatest number of new institutions and disciplines, while South Asia appears as the region climbing the most in the rankings.
